What can fragments teach us about poetic making? We will look at translations of Sappho’s fragments from Mary Barnard and Anne Carson alongside modern and contemporary texts in which brokenness, irresolution, brevity, and rupture are integral to meaning. Is the fragment a poetic form? What do fragments do and when do writers choose to write in fragment? How do we read fragments? We’ll also consider how the fragment functions within supposedly “whole” poems. This master class will begin with a brief lecture with abundant examples and then hopefully lead to robust discussion and at least one writing exercise.
This class is part of Charlotte Lit’s 4X4CLT series. Please also join us on Friday, September 6, 6:30 pm at The Light Factory for the quarterly poetry+art poster release, with a reading by featured poet Jennifer Chang.
