Sometimes a poem pushes against the shape we’ve decided it should take, extending itself to the margins of one page, and the next. At others, a piece of prose decides to be fussy, demands that every other sentence be indented, or all punctuation be dropped. Suddenly, we’re in no man’s land. And, so what? There’s a lot of room in that country for exploration. Does it really matter what we call these renegade writings? In this class, we’ll study a variety of “pieces” that will teach us about the strange power of hybrid forms. We’ll also engage in writing exercises that encourage us to push beyond the boundaries we typically set for ourselves.
